What Is a MEHKO?
You may have heard the term “MEHKO” and how it’s going to change the food landscape; so, what is a MEHKO anyway?
As of September 18, 2018, under California Assembly Bill no. 626, an individual can open up their home as a tiny “restaurant” called a Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation (MEHKO) for small-scale food preparation and sales.
The MEHKO regulation allows for chefs who have obtained a MEHKO health permit, completed a Food Handlers Certification, and comply with their county’s list of operational regulations to sell home-cooked food directly to hungry customers. MEHKO chefs can have up to $50k in gross annual sales, selling up to 60 meals per week out of their residence. What’s great about Tre’dish is that once a chef reaches this threshold, we graduate them into our commercial kitchen environment to support their continued growth and sales.
If you’re a chef, this sounds like a great regulation right? It is very exciting, but there’s still a lot to figure out before you can start selling food from home. Just like a traditional restaurant, there are certain restrictions and limits to what you’re able to sell from a health & safety perspective. These limits include food preparation, cooking, serving and delivery. That’s where Tre’dish comes in to help. The bill specifies that MEHKOs may work with an internet food service intermediary (IFSI) to advertise and sell food. We are that fully integrated platform.
